How to Edit Video on Your Own Computer

I bet you already have what you need

One thing about this tech revolution is that we now have more technology than many of us know how to use! And that applies to video and video editing on your PC. I am willing to bet that you have all the gizmos and gadgets you need to turn raw family footage into something snappier.

So in this tutorial, I am going to show you - step by step - how to spin video straw into video gold by editing your own video on your Windows PC.

Microsoft Movie Maker

Step1: Confirm Video Editing Software

If you Google the words "video editing software" you will see endless video editing programs. It can be very confusing. Ignore them all. For home video editing on a PC, Microsoft gives you Windows Movie Maker, for free.

Check your PC right now under programs and see if you have it. If not, download it from Microsoft. You will be ready to edit video on your PC in no time at all!

Step 2: Check out the Movie Maker interface

When you double click the Movie Maker icon, the program opens up right away. It's nice and simple. Here is what it looks like. (Your screen will not look like exactly like mine. I have added the red frames and letters as well as imported some media assets into the project.)

The Movie Maker interface has 5 main areas

It's helpful to think about the interface in its 5 main sections. At the top is the Main Menu (A) where you have drop-down menus for "file", "edit", "view", "tools", "play" and "help". Click on the items to see what they have underneath. (You will be familiar with the idea from other programs you run our your PC.)

On the left of the interface is a list of Tasks (B). These are pretty much the same as the items in the main menu but they are nice and handy here. Next along to the right is an Imported Media (C) window showing the media you have imported into the project. (Video files have a film sprocket border.)

On the right of the interface you see a Preview Screen (D) (currently showing a bear). This is the area you use to preview your movie. You will also drag clips here from your Imported Media and cut them into smaller chunks.

Underneath and running along the bottom is your Timeline (E). This shows you all the clips you have arranged in the order they will appear in your video. You can toggle between a Timeline view and a Storyboard view using the down triangle.

Step 3: Import media to your PC

Connect camera to computer

Decide what you want to include in your video. Your options are: video footage, photographs, music and audio. (You can also add narration.)

Then, use the Import command to get it into your project. If you have existing files on your computer, just click on Import > videos/pictures/audio or music, navigate to the file - and stand back!

If the video is in your camera, you will need to connect the camera to your PC. The command is Import > From Digital Video Camera. You may need to rummage through your old video camera packaging to find that cable or the installation disk. (Tip: A host of technology problems can be solved with the right cable or connector.)

Step 4: Create a rough cut of your movie

Now we are really getting down to business! With your assets imported into your project, it is time to arrange them in the order you want them to appear in your video. And nothing could be simpler. Look at your Imported Media (C) window, choose an "asset" (tech-speak for a video or photo or music track), then drag it down to the Timeline or Storyboard (E). It's all drag and drop!

Just drag and drop to the Timeline/Storyboard

You place your media in the Timeline/Storyboard just like you would assemble frames in a comic. Once you place one item, go ahead and place another.
And if you want to see how your video plays when the pieces are all connected, just click on the Preview Screen (D) play button.
Well done! You have just edited a "rough cut" of your movie on your own PC. Now read on!

Step 5: Fine tune and fiddle!

The last step when editing video on a PC is to right-size your video clips and to add finishing touches like titles, credits, fade-ins and fade-outs, special effects and maybe even narration. This is called the "final cut".

The secret here is to play. Poke around the buttons and see what they do! Video editing on a PC is non-destructive, which means that as you fiddle, you are not changing the original video. Oh yeah, like anything you do on the PC, when you edit, save your Movie Maker project from time to time. (Tip: If you want to try something out, save a new version of your project under a different name.)

Shorten video by dragging in the arrows

Right-sizing video: Make sure you are on Timeline view (click the little down triangle if you are on Storyboard view). Then, click on your video. Two arrows appear at either end of the clip (see picture). Drag the arrows inward to shorten your video at the beginning of the end.

You can also break up a video by dragging it to the Preview Screen, playing the bit you want, then hitting the "Split" button. That creates a new clip. Repeat as many times as you need.
Special effects, transitions, titles: These effects are really simple to add. Just click on the Edit menu and follow the prompts. When you edit video on a PC, you can add effects such as "old film", sepia, mirror effects - you name it. (If you want to create a slide show, just drop all your images into the "Timeline/Storyboard" and use "Effects" to pan across your images - just like Ken Burns!)

Choose from a large range of video editing effects right on your PC

You have just edited a video on your PC!

Congratulations! You have just edited your first movie on your PC! The final step is to hit the "Publish Movie" button in the Main Menu (A) and choose how you want to watch your movie.

So, what to edit? Well, there is video that you shoot yourself, of course.

Or, you could edit video or film that you have already shot, or that someone else in the family shot. Transferring your 8mm, Hi8 video or VHS tapes to DVD - or better, to a hard drive - allows you to use your new found editing skills to turn those old home movies into a family documentary.

Final Tip: Practice! Video editing is a learned skill and the more you do it, the better you get. You will get faster - I promise!

And stay tuned for more tips on editing video on your PC. Video editing really is a blast!

All best laptop of present market place

Resize picture at any size (Stamp, Passport, 3R, 4R) by photoshop

Small is Big: the iPad Mini

Small tablets are tailor-made for road warriors. They’re easy, light, portable, and have all the power you need to access the internet or write an email on the go. More functional than smartphones, less bulky than laptops, they’re quickly becoming a must-have in every go bag. Now the only question is: Which smaller tablet should you carry? For me, there are two serious contenders " the Nexus 7 that’s already in my go bag and the iPad Mini Apple shared with me to review.
The iPad Mini comes with a legacy advantage. Apple is the market leader in tablets, selling more than 100 million iPads in fewer than three years. By one recent analysis, iPads account for 98% of all web traffic originating from tablets " and 54% from all mobile devices, including smartphones. It’s not as if no other tablet comes close: It’s more like every other tablet combined doesn’t come close.
Still, the iPad Mini was only introduced last October, which meant that competitors could beat it to the small tablet market. The Nexus 7 was released earlier in 2012, and, for all intents and purposes, introduced the category*. Cheaper worthy tablets like the Kindle Fire and Barnes & Noble Nook also joined the fray, creating need for Apple to create the iPad Mini, and the appealing chance for price pressure on the iPad premium.
So, which one is a smarter choice to toss in my go bag?
On one level, it comes down to the software, specifically the iPad’s iOS versus the Nexus 7′s Android platform. To note the obvious, app selection is vastly superior for Apple devices. The total number of apps available isn’t necessarily make or break, if the ones you need exist on your platform of choice. But the extent to which you need to be future proof is a factor. The Apple and Android development communities are both robust.
One of the simplest hardware decisions is one of the most powerful on the iPad: The placement of the iPad’s home button makes it possible to wake the device with one hand when it’s lying on a surface. On the Nexus 7 the wake-up key is on the recessed side and cannot even be accessed when laying flat. I often use a tablet right next to my laptop for quick reference, and being able to work it with one hand is big plus.
That home button is also your quick access to Siri. With a press of that button, you can access any app and conduct any web search. You can dictate and send SMS and IM messages. As a second screen " say you’re working at your laptop " hitting the home button and saying “open IMDB” doesn’t require nearly the level of disengagement from your main task as navigating for the app. It’s akin to hitting an intercom and having an assistant play a crucial supporting role as you stay focussed on the task at hand. Semantic search is still a work in progress, but don’t hold that against this technology, which in addition to providing reliable command and control is also a powerful dictationist. I use Siri to take notes all the time, and it’s usually the way I start writing anything. The Nexus 7 equivalent requires first navigating to a Google search prompt (after using two hands to unlock the device). A painfully long time passes at is processes the request, then tells you (verbally) it is opening the app, then opens the app. It’s a novelty to the point of being worthless. Add to that, in my far-from-scientific tests, word recognition was vastly superior on the iPad.
There other important differences. Google search from the home screen is unexpectedly better on the iPad than on the Nexus 7. IPad also has the clear edge in the PIM Department: both the mail and calendar clients are more usable.
I also prefer notifications on iPad " the Nexus 7 status bar can get clogged with icons, when all I need to know is that I have something awaiting my attention. Both reveal the entirety of waiting messages with a swipe down from the top, and Android notifications can all be closed with a single swipe " on the iPad, only each app’s notifications can be cleared en masse. Another a small improvement in iOS would be single icon indicating unseen notifications.
I didn’t want to like the new iPad charging interface " the lightning connector. Actually, I wanted to hate it, partly because of the inconvenience of potentially rendering my vast collection of “old” adapters obsolete and partly because Apple (almost certainly for revenue reasons, I imagine) chose to move to another proprietary standard and not micro USB. But after using thunderbolt for a while, I’ve become a convert. It’s superior to USB because it’s “reversible” " it can be plugged in either way. It also provides very satisfying haptic feedback that it has been inserted properly, unlike the analog plug or USB. And, hey, didn’t Palm change their connector more than a couple of times?
I also want to hate 4G models of any kind, not because of the extra hardware cost but because data plans aren’t rational " I would pay more than twice as much for AT&T’s “Mobile Share” for less data than I contract for now using three iPhones on my family plan. Under Mobile Share, if I added a tablet with only 1 GB of data that would increase the share plan by $25 a month. As it stands now, dropping my personal hotspot and adding 3 GB for an iPad a la carte would increase increase my bill by only $5 for that same 1 extra GB.
Paying a la carte for connectivity on your phones and tablet is maddening, but it’s hardly the fault of the tablet makers. The iPad’s implementation of 4G backup was perfect in my tests, which included above-ground rail commuting. If you happen to be in a 4G-LTE zone, the speed is breathtaking. If your phone can connect, so will your iPad, whenever you do anything which requires Internet, with no special setup. It’s like a hybrid automobile that starts using the standby gas on its own initiative: it is a non-event for you, just as it should be.
Peripheral cabling is also not a fair fight between the iPad and Nexus 7. An optional thunderbolt-to-HDMI cable means that an iPad can be your entertainment hub in most hotel rooms, patched right into that massive flat screen TV. At home it can substitute for a Roku or Apple TV for downloaded video " and it operates with the cover closed so there is no mirror image you have to hide under a pillow. At present, there is no equivalent on the Nexus 7.
The iPads " more accurately, iOS 6.0.2 " does lack one powerful feature found on the Nexus 7: Gesture typing. This input technique allows you to skate across the keyboard to form words rather than tapping individual keys. It’s a surprisingly effective way to type, especially when standing and holding the tablet in one hand. There is no equivalent for Apple devices. (Swype, a third-party app, has been available for Android devices for some time but gesture typing is now part of the OS of the latest Android update, Jellybean 4.2).
That one winning feature may not be a deciding factor. But while I have defaulted to my review iPad Mini for most everything in recent days, I continue to grab my Nexus 7 when I want to jot something down (and can’t, for ambient reasons, use Siri). But adding gesture typing would be an easy fix for Apple, one which would make their 7″ entrant virtually unassailable. I hope the company isn’t adamantly against it, as it seems to be regarding NFC " also ubiquitous on Android devices and nowhere to be found in the Apple universe.
On battery life, iPad Mini seems a clear winner as well. It charges more rapidly and discharges more slowly than the Nexus 7, in part because the Android device tends to like things running in the background. That’s addressable, but a nuisance task.
For the truly mobile " those of it who intend to lug it around to use it at home, at work, and everywhere in between " the iPad Mini is the clear choice for a smaller tablet. A Mini is destined for my go bag, probably this spring. There are rumors that a second generation is coming out as early as March, so I’m holding off on making the purchase until that clears up. But as soon as Apple makes its move on the iPad Mini, one will move into a permanent place in my go bag.

Important tips to search with Google

If you’re like me, you probably use Google many times a day. But, chances are, unless you are a technology geek, you probably still use Google in its simplest form. If your current use of Google is limited to typing a few words in, and changing your query until you find what you’re looking for, then I’m here to tell you that there’s a better way- and it’s not hard to learn. On the other hand, if you are a technology geek, and can use Google like the best of them already, then I suggest you bookmark this article. You’ll then have it on hand when you are ready to pull your hair out in frustration when watching a neophyte repeatedly type in basic queries in a desperate attempt to find something.
The following tips are based on my own experience and things that I actually find useful. The list is by no means comprehensive. But, I assure you that by learning and using the 12 tips below, you’ll rank up there with the best of the Google experts out there. I’ve kept the descriptions intentionally terse as you’re likely to grasp most of these simply by looking at the example anyways.
12 Quick Tips To Search Google Like An Expert
1. Explicit Phrase: Let’s say you are looking for content about internet marketing. Instead of just typing internet marketing into the Google search box, you will likely be better off searching explicitly for the phrase. To do this, simply enclose the search phrase within double quotes.
Example: “internet marketing”
2. Exclude Words: Let’s say you want to search for content about internet marketing, but you want to exclude any results that contain the term advertising. To do this, simply use the “-” sign in front of the word you want to exclude.
Example: search: internet marketing-advertising
3. Site Specific Search: Often, you want to search a specific website for content that matches a certain phrase. Even if the site doesn’t support a built-in search feature, you can use Google to search the site for your term. Simply use the “site:janlewala.blogspot.com” modifier.
Example: “internet marketing” site:http://janlewala.blogspot.com
4. Similar Words and Synonyms: Let’s say you are want to include a word in your search, but want to include results that contain similar words or synonyms. To do this, use the “~” in front of the word.
Example: “internet marketing”~professional
5. Specific Document Types: If you’re looking to find results that are of a specific type, you can use the modifier “filetype:”. For example, you might want to find only PowerPoint presentations related to internet marketing.
Example: “internet marketing” filetype:ppt
6. This OR That: by default, when you do a search, Google will include all the terms specified in the search. If you are looking for any one of one or more terms to match, then you can use the OR operator. (Note: The OR has to be capitalized).
Example: internet marketing OR advertising
7. Phone Listing: Let’s say someone calls you on your mobile number and you don’t know how it is. If all you have is a phone number, you can look it up on Google using the phonebook feature.
Example: phonebook:617-555-1212 (note: the provided number does not word- you’ll have to use a real number to et any results).
8. Area Code Lookup: If all you need to do is to look-up the area code for a phone number, just enter the 3-digit area code and Google will tell you where it’s from.
Example: 617
9. Numeric Ranges: This is a rarely used, but highly useful tip. Let’s say you want to find results that contain any of a range of numbers. You can do this by using the X..Y modifier (in case this hard to read, what’s between the X and Y are two periods. This type of search is useful for years (as shown below), prices or anywhere where you want to provide a series of numbers.
Example: president 1940..1950
10. Stock (Ticker Symbol): Just enter a valid ticker symbol as your search term and Google will give you the current financials and a quick thumb-nail chart for the stock.
Example: GOOG
11. Calculator: The next time you need to do a quick calculation, instead of bringing up the Calculator applet, you can just type your expression in to Google.
Example: 4851*1.02
12. Word Definitions: If you need to quickly look up the definition of a word or phrase, simply use the “define:” command.
Example: define:plethora
Hope this proves useful in your future Google searches. If there are any of your favorite Google power tips that I’ve missed, please free to share them in the comments via mail.

How does internet search engine work

The good news about the Internet and its most visible component, the World Wide Web, is that there are hundreds of millions of pages available, waiting to present information on an amazing variety of topics. The bad news about the Internet is that there are hundreds of millions of pages available, most of them titled according to the whim of their author, almost all of them sitting on servers with cryptic names. When you need to know about a particular subject, how do you know which pages to read? It you’re like most people, you visit an Internet search engine.
Internet search engines are special sites on the Web that are designed to help people find information stored on other sites. There are differences in the ways various search engines work, but they all perform three basic tasks: They search the internet—or select pieces of the Internet—based on important words.
They deep an index of the words they find, and where they find them. They allow users to look for words or combinations of words found in that index. Early search engines held an index of a few hundred thousand pages and documents, and received maybe one or two thousand inquiries each day. Today, a top search engine will index hundreds of millions of pages, and respond to tens of millions of queries per day. In this article, we’ll tell you how these major tasks are performed, and how Internet search engines put the pieces together in order to let you find the information you need on the Web.
Looking at the Web Searches Per Day: Top 5 Engines Google- 250 million, Overture- 167 million, Inktomi- 80 million, LookSmart- 45 million, FindWhat- 33 million.
When most people talk about Internet search engines, they really mean World Wide Web search engines. Before the Web became the most visible part of the Internet, there ere already search engines in place to help people find information on the Net. Programs with names like “gopher” and “Archie” kept indexes of files stored on servers connected to the Internet, and dramatically reduced the amount of time required to find programs and documents. In the late 1980s, getting serious value from the Internet meant knowing how to use gopher, Archie, Veronica and the rest.
Today, most Internet users limit their searches to the Web, so we’ll limit this article to search engines that focus on the contents of Web pages.
An Itsy- Bitsy Beginning Before a search engine can tell you where a file or document is, it must be found. To find information on the hundreds of millions of Web pages that exist, a search engine employs special software robots, called spiders, to build lists of the words found on Web sites. When a spider is building its lists, the process is called Web crawling. (There are some disadvantages to calling part of the Internet the World Wide Web- a large set of arachnid-centric names for tools is one of them.) In order to build and maintain a useful list of words, a search engine’s spiders have to look at a lot of pages.
How does any spider start its travels over the Web?
The usual starting points are lists of heavily used servers and very popular pages. The spider will begin with a popular site, indexing the words on its pages and following every link found within the site. In this way, the spidering system quickly begins to travel, spreading out across the most widely used portions of the Web.
“Spiders” take a Web page’s content and create key search words that enable online users to find pages they’re looking for. Google began as an academic search engine. In the paper that describes how the system was built, Sergey Brin and Lawrence Page give an example of how quickly their spiders can work. They built their initial system to use multiple spiders, usually three at one time. Each spider could keep about 300 connections to Web pages open at a time. AT its peak performance, using four spiders, their system could crawl over 100 pages per second, generating around 600 kilobytes of data each second. Keeping everything running quickly meant building a system to feed necessary information to the spiders. The early Google system had a server dedicated to providing URLs to the spiders. Rather than depending on an Internet service provider for the domain name server (DNS) that translates a server’s name into an address, Google had its own DNS, in order to keep delays to a minimum.
When the Google spider looked at an HTML page, it took note of two things: The words within the page and where the words were found.
Words occurring in the title, subtitles, Meta tags and other positions of relative importance were noted for special consideration during a subsequent user search. The Google spider was built to index every significant word on a page, leaving out the articles “a”, “an” and “the”. Other spiders take different approaches.
These different approaches usually attempt to make the spider operate faster; allow users to search more efficiently or both. For example, some spiders will keep track of the words in the title, sub-headings and links, along with the 100 most frequently used words on the page and each word in the first 20 lines of text. Lycos is said to use this approach to spidering the Web.
Other system, such as AltaVista, go in the other direction, indexing every single word on a page, including “a”, “an”, “the” and other “insignificant” words. The push to completeness in this approach is matched by other systems in the attention given to the unseen portion of the Web page, the Meta tags.
The Problem with Keyword Searching
Keyword searches have a tough time distinguishing between words that are spelled the same way, but mean something different (i.e. hard cider, a hard stone, a hard exam, and the hard drive on your computer). This often results in hits that are completely irrelevant to your query. Some search engines also have trouble with so-called stemming—i.e. if you enter the word “big”, should they return a hit on the word, “bigger?” What about singular and plural words? What about verb tenses that differ from the word you entered by only an “s” or and “ed”?
Search engines also cannot return hits on keywords that mean the same, but are not actually entered in your query. A query on heart disease would not return a document that used the word “cardiac” instead of “heart”. Concept-based searching (This information is out-dated, but might have historical interest for researchers).
Excite used to be the best-known general-purpose search engine site on the Web that relies on concept-based searching. It is now effectively extinct. Unlike keyword search systems, concept-based search systems try to determine what you mean, not just what you say. In the best circumstances, a concept-based search returns hits on documents that are “about” the subject/theme you’re exploring, even if the words in the document don’t precisely match the words you enter into the query.
How did this method word?
There are various methods of building clustering systems, some of which are highly complex, relying on sophisticated linguistic and artificial intelligence theory that we won’t even attempt to go into here. Excite used to a numerical approach. Excites software determines meaning by calculating the frequency with which certain important words appear. When several words or phrases that are tagged to signal a particular concept appear close to each other in a text, the search engine concludes, by statistical analysis that the piece is “about” a certain subject.
For example, the word heart, when used in the medical/health context, would be likely to appear with such words as coronary, artery, lung, stroke, cholesterol, pump, blood, attack, and arteriosclerosis. If the word heart appears in a document with others words such as flowers, candy, love, passion and valentine, a very different context is established and a concept-oriented search engine returns hits on the subject of romance. This ends the outdated “concept-based” information section.
Refining Your Search
Most sites offer two different types of searches- “basic” and “refined”. In a “basic” search, you just enter a keyword without sifting through any pull down menus of additional options. Depending on the engine, though, “basic” searches can be quite complex. Search refining options differ from one search engine to another, but some of the possibilities include the ability to search on more than one word, to give more weight to one search term than you give to another, and to exclude words that might be likely to muddy the results. You might also be able to search on proper names, on phrases, and on words that are found within a certain proximity to other a certain proximity to other search terms.
Some search engines also allow you to specify what form you’d like your results to appear in, and whether you wish to restrict your search to certain fields on the internet (i.e. use net or the web) or to specific parts of web documents (i.e. the title or URL).
Many, but not all search engines allow you to use so-called Boolean operators to refine your search. These are the logical terms AND, OR, NOT, and the so-called proximal locators, NEAR and FOLLOWED BY.
Boolean AND means that all the terms you specify must appear in the documents, i.e. “heart” AND “attack”. You might use this if you wanted to exclude common hits that would be irrelevant to your query.
Boolean OR means that at least one of the terms you specify must appear in the specify must appear in the documents, i.e. bronchitis, acute OR chronic. You might use this if you didn’t want to rule out too much.
Boolean NOT means that at least one of the terms you specify must not appear in the documents. You might use this if you anticipated results that would be totally off-base, i.e. nirvana AND Buddhism, NOT Cobain.
Not quite Boolean + and – Some search engines use the characters + and – instead of Boolean operators to include and exclude terms.
NEAR means that the terms you enter should be within a certain number of words of each other.
FOLLOWED BY means that one term must directly follow the other.
ADJ, for adjacent, serves the same function. A search engine that will allow you to search on phrases uses, essentially, the same method (i.e. determining adjacency of keywords).
Phrases: The ability to query on phrases is very important in a search engine. Those that allow it usually require that you enclose the phrase in quotation marks, i.e. “space the final frontiers”.
Capitalization: This is essential for searching on proper names of people, companies or products. Unfortunately, many words in English are used both as proper and common nouns- Bill, bill, Gates, gates, Oracle, oracle, Lotus, lotus, Digital, digital- the list is endless.
All the search engines have different methods of refining queries. The best way to learn them is to read the help files on the search engine sites and practice!
Relevancy Rankings
Most of the search engines return results with confidence or relevancy rankings. In other words, they list the hits according to how closely they think the results match the query. However, these lists often leave users shaking their heads on confusion, since, to the user; the results often seem completely irrelevant.
Why does this happen?
Basically it’s because search engine technology has not yet reached the point where humans and computers understand each other well enough to communicate clearly.
Most search engines use search term frequency as a primary way of determining whether a document is relevant. If you’re researching diabetes and the word “diabetes” appears multiple times in a web document, it’s reasonable to assume that the document will contain useful information. Therefore, a document that repeats the word “diabetes” over and over is likely to turn up near the top of your list. If your keyword is a common one, or if it has multiple other meanings, you could end up with a lot of irrelevant hits. And if your keyword is a subject about which you desire information, you don’t need to see it repeated over and over—it’s the information about that word that you’re interested in, not the word itself.
Some search engines consider both the frequency and the positioning of keywords to determine relevancy, reasoning that if the keywords appear early in the document, or in the headers, this increases the likelihood that the document is on target. For example, one mehod is to rank hits according to how many times your keywords appear and in which fields they appear (i.e. in headers, titles or plain text). Another method is to determine which documents are most frequently linked to other documents on the web. The reasoning here is that if other folks consider certain pages important, you should, too.
If you use the advanced query form on AltaVista, you can assign relevance weights to your query terms before conducting a search. Although this takes some practice, it essentially allows you to have a stronger say in what results you will get back.
As far as the user is concerned, relevancy ranking is critical, and becomes more so as the sheer volume of information on the web grows. Most of us don’t have the time to sift through scores of hits to determine which hyperlinks we should actually explore. The more clearly relevant the results are, the more we’re likely to value the search engine.
Information on Meta Tags
Some search engines are now indexing web documents by the Meta tags in the documents’ HTML (at the beginning of the document in the so-called “head” tag). What this means is that the web page author can have some influence over which keywords are used to index the document, and even in the description of the document that appears when it comes up as a search engine hit.
This is obviously very important if you are trying to draw people to your website based on how your site ranks in search engines hit lists.
There is no perfect way to ensure that you’ll receive a high ranking. Even if you do get a great ranking, there’s no assurance that you’ll keep it for long. For example, at one period a page from the Spider’s Apprentice was the number-one-ranked result on AltaVista for the phrase “how search engines word”. A few months later, however, it had dropped lower in the listings. There is a lot of conflicting information out there on meta-tagging. If you’re confused it may be because different search engines look at meta tags in different ways. Some rely heavily on meta tags, others don’t use them at all. The general opinion seems to be that meta tags are less useful than they were a few years ago, largely because of the high rate of spamdexing (web authors using false and misleading keywords in the meta tags). It seems to be generally agreed that the “title” and the “description” meta tags are important to write effectively, since several major search engines use them in their indices. Use relevant keywords in your title, and vary the titles on the different pages that make up your website, in order to target as many keywords as possible. As for the “description” meta tag, some search engines will use it as their short summary of your URL, so make sure your description is one that will entice surfers to your site.
In the keyword tag, list a few synonyms for keywords, or foreign translations of keywords (if you anticipate traffic from foreign surfers). Make sure the keywords refer to, or are directly related to, the subject or material on the page. Do NOT use false or misleading keywords in an attempt to gain a higher ranking for your pages. The “keyword” meta tag has been abused by some webmasters. For example, a recent ploy has been to put such words “sex” or “mp3” into keyword meta tags, in hopes of luring searchers to one’s website by using popular keywords.
The search engines are aware of such deceptive tactics, and have devised various methods to circumvent them, so be careful. Use keywords that are appropriate to your subject, and make sure they appear in the top paragraphs of actual text on your webpage. Many search engine algorithms score the words that appear towards the top of your document more highly than the words that appear towards the bottom. Words that appear in HTML header tags (H1, H2, H3, H4, H5, H6) are also given more weight by some search engines. It sometimes helps to give your page a file name that makes use of one of your prime keywords, and to include keywords in the “alt” image tags.
One thing you should not do is use some other company’s trademarks in your meta tags. Some website owners have been sued for trademark violations because they’ve used other company names in the meta tags. I have, in fact, testified as an expert witness in such cases. You do not want the expense of being sued!
Remember that all the major search engines have slightly different policies. If you’re designing a website and meta-tagging your documents, we recommend that you take the time to check out what the major search engines say in their help files about how they each use meta tags. You might want to optimize your meta tags for the search engines you believe are sending the most traffic to your site.
